Sometime later, there was a knock on my door. I didn’t respond have time to repsond before my little sister barged in.
She crossed her arms and leaned against the door, regarding me with her hard expression. “Now you know,” she said simply.
“You knew?”
She fretted with her split ends. “Mom only told me yesterday. When I went up upstairs while you were being a baby in the kitchen.” Abby pushed off the door and sat in my old computer chair, facing me. “She talks in her sleep, you know. Especially when they have her on strong medication.”
“I didn’t know.”
“She must have had some pretty bad nightmares because she mentioned the binding spell. When she woke up, I asked her about it. And she told me everything.” She shook her head. “Talk about dropping a bombshell.”
So that was why Abby’s entire demeanor had changed yesterday. “I never knew.”
“Yeah, well,” Abby said, casting her eyes down.
“I’m so sorry.”
Abby didn’t give me platitudes by saying that it was all right or that I was young when I did it. That wasn’t what would help now. What would help was trying to find another way.
I could help her. I’d been holding back my magick for years, but I would fall back into it if it meant my mother could live longer.
“We could save her.”
Abby gave me a suspicious look. “Don’t you think you’ve done enough damage, Jordyn?”
That stung, but I wasn’t about to let it go. Not when my mother’s life was on the line. Call me stupid—after all, I’d dabbled in trying to save lives before—but this was different. This was trying to atone for my past mistakes.
“I mean we find another way to stop Zach. Take the burden off Mom.”
Abby shook her head. “No, absolutely not.”
“We could look in spell books. We could—”
“Jordyn!” my sister exclaimed, exasperated. “Please. Drop it.” She got to her feet and stormed out of the room.
“Abby,” I pleaded, following her out. She disappeared into her own room just as the doorbell rang.
Ugh, what now?
What if it was Zach again? I couldn’t handle him right now. Especially if he had killed David and Shea but I didn’t want the doorbell to disturb Mom.
I padded down the stairs to the front door. Luckily, it had a peephole. I steadied myself, working to calm my rapidly beating heart before I dared to look. I stood up on my tiptoes and peered through, holding my breath.
It was Luke in plainclothes meaning that he wasn’t here on official police business. My anger from earlier reared its ugly head, remembering that he practically fed me to the wolves this morning.
With shaking hands, I undid the locks and opened it.
He pushed past me, inside the house, thankfully allowing me enough room to close the door. Maybe Zach wasn’t loitering around. That also was a scary idea, because I didn’t want to think about where he could be.
“Are you all right, Jordyn?” Luke asked.
No. I choked back all of the recent revelations and focused on the bone that I did have to pick with him.
